Orbit is working with UnionDocs, a non-profit center for documentary art, as they renovate their new location in Ridgewood, Queens. UnionDocs is accepting donations of new, surplus and salvaged constructions materials from construction sites and suppliers. They are able to pick-up materials, provide a tax receipt for donations, and will recognize donors in their opening marketing and communications. Learn more about their ambitious project here.

The Port Authority is deconstructing the Lincoln Tunnel’s retaining walls, originally built between 1937 and 1945, to make way for new ramps serving the future Midtown Bus Terminal. Rather than crushing these historic bricks for use as fill, the Port Authority is partnering with Orbit, a marketplace for the circular construction sector, and Chief Bricks, specialists in salvaged materials, to preserve and recirculate these bricks back into the local economy.  Prospective buyers can learn more and express interest in available bricks here: Lincoln Tunnel Bricks.

This deconstruction and material reuse pilot is being conducted through the Transit Tech Lab, a public-private partnership between the Partnership Fund for New York City and regional transit agencies. The pilot will evaluate the financial and embodied carbon savings of brick salvage and reuse compared with conventional demolition, while also testing market demand for historic reclaimed materials.

Orbit will be supporting Governors Island's Design + Construction team to salvage and donate materials from the renovation of a landmarked historic Officer's Home, originally built in 1891. Stay tuned for more on these available materials.

Join Gilbane for a site walk-through of the Bush Terminal construction site. Originally built in the 1890s, the site offers an opportunity to reclaim salvaged materials that would otherwise go to landfill.
